Kyoto is one of the world’s most iconic cities whose culture and art are deeply rooted in Japanese history. While Kyoto has since ancient times been celebrated as ‘a town of making’, western culture has also been a great inspiration for Japanese modernization and cultural development. Throughout Japan’ s history, many rich cultures and products have been exported from Europe, East Asia, and China during the history of Silk Road, this helped established the foundations of Kyoto as a cultural city. Takeuchi Seiho and his many associates, as active members of Kyoto’ s art scene, incorporate influences from many art movements and Western art, giving birth to amongst other things modern Japanese painting. To develop this cultural link, GENETO ART FOUNDATION is inviting expressions of interest from contemporary artists from overseas, who would like to come to Kyoto for short period of time and live in this space. We hoped this would add jointly to our cultures by triggering new relationships and generating new work in terms of the philosophy and practice for future contemporary art in Japan.

No.2 is located in the area of Higashiyama Sanjo in Kyoto, Japan, where many traditional townhouses are clustered and Okazaki area is just walking distance. Breaking down all partitions and walls apart from beams to transform the 100 years old townhouse into a simple and modern white house for creative activity. The first floor is a bedroom and the ground floor is for studio space during artist’s stay, however the use of the space at no.2 will be totally counted on artists. The aim of no.2 is to create the source of art in Kyoto where artists from all over the world come and experience Japanese culture and renew the space through their creative activities.
